It is snowing and I notice chickens in the backyard. The cats are circling, so I pick up two chickens and hold them tightly against my chest. I spot a peacock in the neighbour’s yard – it looks cold and nobody is home, so I rescue it too.
Old Scar
I have known you for a very long time. Today you turn your face, and I see that you have an enormous scar on your right cheek. It has obviously been there for years. I pretend not to notice.
Open House
My mother and I go to an open house, where she sits down and falls asleep. I am uncomfortable with the way the furniture is laid out. I wake her up so we can rearrange it.
Wrong Gulf
You plan to swim across the Persian Gulf. I consider myself an expert on the area, and advise you to stop off in Tampa if you get tired. Wrong. Gulf.
Golden Gate Bridge
I go to San Francisco, knowing full well that you are also going. I arange to be crossing the bridge wearing a beautiful purple dress, just at the moment when I know you will be there. I hear you say JOAN WHAT ON EARTH ARE YOU DOING HERE? I turn around and feign surprise. Oh hi, I say. I like to travel.
